2024 SUMA Young Artists Bridge Project Awards

  수원은 1789년 정조가 화성을 축조한 뒤 성곽을 경계로 중심과 변두리 지역이 형성되었다. 그러나 1970년경 근대화 바람과 함께 수원에 인구가 급속도로 팽창하고 성곽 외부에 신도시가 형성되면서 수원의 중심지였던 남향동은 구도심으로 변화하고 말았다. 이러한 공간적 위상의 뒤바뀜은 성곽 이외에도 다양한 경계를 기준으로 이루 어진다. 특히 수원 시장 내외부의 경계는 다양한 세대와 문화를 가로지르면서도 켜켜 이 중첩된 형태를 보여준다.

  프로젝트 <첩첩시상>은 수원의 시장 네 곳(팔달시장, 지동시장, 영동시장, 못골시장)을 중심으로 시장의 수호신을 상상하고, 이를 통해 지역성을 기록하려는 시도이다. 윤이도는 탱화 4점을, 김태희는 신이 사용하는 지물을 입체로 제작하였다. 또한 시장 모양 지도 위에 윤이도는 회화를, 김태희는 부조를 제작하였다. XXX는 크고 작은 시장 으로 언제든지 그 위상이 뒤바뀔 수 있는 유동적인 수원의 모습을 그려보고자 하였다.

  Suwon developed a central area and peripheral zones defined by its fortress walls after King Jeongjo built Hwaseong Fortress in 1789. However, around the 1970s, rapid population growth driven by modernization and the formation of new towns outside the fortress caused Namhyang-dong—once the heart of Suwon—to transform into an old downtown area. This reversal of spatial status has occurred not only along the boundary of the fortress but also across various other boundaries. In particular, the boundary between the inside and outside of Suwon’s markets intersects multiple generations and cultures, while revealing a multilayered, overlapping structure.

  The project Layer upon Layer imagines guardian deities of four markets in Suwon (Paldal Market, Jidong Market, Yeongdong Market, and Motgol Market) and seeks to record local identity through them. Yoon Ido created four Buddhist paintings (Taenghwa), while Kim Taehee produced sculptural objects representing the ritual items used by the deities. In addition, on a map shaped like the markets, Yoon Ido created paintings and Kim Taehee produced relief works. XXX sought to depict the fluid nature of Suwon, a city whose hierarchy can be reversed at any time through its large and small markets.
