그 사람은 항상 그곳에 있었다. 갑과 을이 술에 절어 동 트는 순간을 맞이할 때도, 모두가 집으로 돌아와 눈이 뻐근해질 때까지 스마트 폰을 바라보다 지쳐 잠드는 새벽에도. 이름이 있었다면 아아아, 여어, 그-어, 가 어울릴 법한 그는 항상 숨죽이고 서 있었다.
그가 서서히 숨을 빼 공기 같은 돌로 변할 때까지 누구도 그 사실을 알아채지 못했다. 왜 그가 그곳에 멈춰 서있는지조차 알지 못했기 때문이다. 사람들은 돌이 된 그를 보며 망부석이다, 보물이 숨겨진 석탑이다, 후세에 도시의 뾰루지 쯤으로 여겨질 것이다, 수군거렸다.
그도 그럴것이, 도시의 언덕 어디쯤에 박제되어 있는 모양새가 마치 산자락에 있는 이름 모를 무덤 같았다. 무명의 무덤. 아무도 찾지 않는 무덤은 시간이 지나면 점점 가라앉아 흙이 된다. 무명의 무덤에 대한 연구는 이 소멸의 순간에 대한 것이다.

That person was always there. Whether it was when A and B were toasting, welcoming the dawn of a drunken revelry, or when everyone returned home and stared at their smartphones until their eyes grew tired and they drifted off to sleep in the early morning. If he had a name, it would have been Ahh, Yeah, Uh-huh, or something fitting like that; he always stood there, holding his breath.
No one noticed until he gradually turned into a stone, like the air being sucked out until he became solid rock. They didn't even understand why he was standing there in the first place. People murmured that he was a mourning stone, a stupa hiding treasures, or a pimple on the city's face that would be considered a relic in the future.
It was no wonder, as the shape of his figure, perched on a hillside somewhere in the city, resembled an anonymous tomb. An unknown tomb. Unsearched tombs gradually sink into the ground as time passes. Research on unknown tombs is about these moments of disappearance.

광명시 철산역 인근 로데오거리로 진입하는 입구에 돌로 만든 공공조각이 놓여있다. 작품의 제목은 “광명의 횃불”. 빛날 광(光)에 밝을 명(明)이라는 도시명에 따라 횃불이 찬란한 태양처럼 떠오르는 행복한 미래를 기원했을 것이다. 그러나 정작 이 작품 앞을 지나는 시민들은 작품에 무심한 태도를 보이고, 조각이 놓인 장소는 유흥가의 반짝이는 불빛만이 가득하다.

Near the entrance to the Rodeo Street, adjacent to Cheolsan Station in Gwangmyeong City, there stands a public sculpture made of stone. The title of the artwork is "Torch of Gwangmyeong." Reflecting the city name's meaning, where "Gwang" means shining light and "myeong" means brightness, it's likely that the torch symbolizes a bright and happy future, shining like the sun. However, citizens passing by the artwork often show indifference, and the location where the sculpture stands is filled only with the glittering lights of entertainment districts.
